Wadden Experience | Two days | 12 May 2021
After the successful first edition of the Wadden Experience in 2020, this year we will set sail once again with the amazing clipper, the Willem Jacob, for a unique photography and sailing adventure! On Wednesday the 12th of May at 2 pm we would like to welcome you in the harbor of Harlingen, from where we sail to one of the sandbanks in the middle of the Wadden Sea.
After a short briefing from the skipper and Harmen, it’s time to get the hundred-year-old ship ready to sail to our destination. Anyone who likes, can help! I can assure you, this is a lot of fun! Once we are in full sail, you can relax on the deck. There are many beautiful things to see during the crossing! That is why it is possible to use binoculars or telephoto lenses, which have been provided by Transcontinenta Benelux and Tamron Netherlands.
We drop anchor around 4:00 PM and let ourselves run dry. Now we can take our first steps on the sandbank. Here, Harmen will explain how to create beautiful compositions and how to find the right elements for the perfect photo. We do this in preparation for the sunrise session. Because low tide coincides perfectly with sunrise!
As night falls
We have dinner on board, and while the ship start to float again we can enjoy the beautiful sunset. The sun sets at 9:23 PM and we can shoot some nice images from the deck. Hopefully the sky is clear and because there is no moon, it is a dark night. Perfect for stargazing and astro photography. You could also enjoy a drink belowdecks. Or have a goodnight sleep in the sleeping area of the hold. But make sure to set the alarm because the sun rises at 5:48 am.
A magical experience
While we sleep, the tide slowly retracts and at about 05:00 we can disembark to photograph sunrise! This is a magical experience! You’ll see the world awaken from a perspective you have never seen before! Everyone can go wherever they want; The sandbar is immense and there is much to see and discover.
Meanwhile, our hostess prepares a nice breakfast with warm toast and a boiled egg. As soon as we are afloat, we set sail once again. Maybe we see seals or we spot nesting Kentish plovers. While sailing there is much to see and photograph. So keep your camera’s ready! Eventually we arrive back in Harlingen at around 11 am.
